O'Grady lived in the city of Wheaton, Illinois and attended the North High School of Wheaton in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. Her appearances in commercials before making the move into Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady's early career was as a Montgomery Ward model, where she also made several commercials. She made her debut on the screen with the romantic drama She's Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Alongside guest-starring on various shows, and in independent films as well as produced for television, she also appeared as a star of several TV programs. Donna Abandando is her first role as a major role in ABC's NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the large-haired squad secretary from 1993 to 1996. Each year received the Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting actor in Drama Series. In 1995, O'Grady won Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series alongside the entire cast.
